Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol This famous work of literature has been transformed into a radioplay by the BBC. It features Michael Palin as the narrator. It's well worth a listen. You can hear the second installment online now. This is a humourous 19th century novel by a Russian writer. The main plot revolves around the main character's attempt to get a bank loan by using dead serfs as the collateral. Hippie Meme | You scored as One Intelectual Individual. You're a thinker. You see things from a very different prospective than the rest of the world, and probably find release and self-expression in music, painting, scalpting, or any other form of art. People see you as a deep person, full of knowledge that they don't understand. People are attracted to that, but there's a good chance you don't care.

Alice's Name Giving
Alice's name giving when splendidly, thanks to all those who attended. We had a function at Mannequins (a local café on North Rd). We had a short ritual followed by some morris dancing and then some afternoon tea. SS Australis
I was looking on the Wikicommons picture of the day site, when I saw a rusted hull of a ship. Looking further I discovered it was the ship on which my family immigrated to New Zealand. Goodness, I don't quite know how to feel.

Proto Germanic Word of the Indeterminate Temporal Measurement *skūrōThanks to Pont for this one who was reading a book about poetry and hopefully Troilus and Cresyde itself and gave me the labour pain connection. The most obvious meaning is the Mod Eng shower. In West Germanic we have the ancient variants OE scūr, OS scûr, OHG scûr; Old Norse has skúr and Gothic skûra. But what Pont wanted to point out was that in Middle English shoures could refer to a woman's labour pains: Harde schourys þenne took her stronge Boþe in bak and eek in wombe. Thanks to Matthew for looking it up in the OED for me while I'm away from work. | | Saturday, March 18th, 2006 | | 8:43 am |
bilingual birth notice denied
The ODT refused to print a bilingual birth notice for us. I'm glad I wasn't there because Cathie said the guy was rude. He said "New Zealand only has two official languages." So much for probably the first European language to be spoken here. ( Same in Dutch - NL )Extra: And then they spelt my name wrong when they did print it! | | Thursday, March 9th, 2006 | | 9:25 pm |
I'm as evil as a backlit doll | You Are 42% Evil | You are evil, but you haven't yet mastered the dark side. Fear not though - you are on your way to world domination. | | | Thursday, February 16th, 2006 | | 10:06 pm |
Proto Germanic word of last week *rēdanThe ancestor of our word to read, through the OE rǣdan. To discuss, advise, counsel, persuade. OF rêda, OS râdan ON ráða and Go ga-rêdan Current Mood: resoluteCurrent Music: Don't Wait Another Day - Greg Johnson | | Friday, February 10th, 2006 | | 7:44 am |
Proto-Germanic word of two weeks ago
The mead has arrived from Bemrose, all 12 bottles of it. That should keep us going for a while. Which leads to: *medumead, intoxicating drink made from honey. ON mjöð, OE meado and OHG metu. |
